The Krishna Yajurveda's Vaikhanas Grihya Sutram, an ancient Indian text, mentions a significant milestone in the Hindu way of life known as "Drishta Sahasrachandro." According to the text, an individual achieves this milestone when they reach the age of eighty years and eight months, symbolising the experience of having witnessed one thousand full moons.
The celebration of Sahasra Poorna Chandrodayam, spanning the time covered by a thousand full moons (approximately 80 years and 8 months), holds great importance. It is a time when the individual who has reached this milestone is honored and celebrated. The Vedic rituals performed during this occasion include prayers to Lord Ganesha, culminating in Poornaahuti (offering to the sacred fire), Satabhishekam, and Sahasra Chandra Darshanam, which involves gazing at the 1000th full moon.
During Sahasra Poorna Chandrodayam celebrations, a custom called Das Danam takes place, involving donations of ten different kinds. These include offerings such as cows (Gaudaan), land (Bhudaan), sesame seeds (Tildaan), gold (Hiranyadaan), ghee or clarified butter (Ajyadaan), food grains (Dhaanyadaan), clothes (Vastradaan), jaggery (Guddaan), silver (Raupyadaan), and salt (Lavandaan).
On this occasion, PM Modi has presented the special gift to US President Joe Biden. The gift is a meticulously handcrafted sandalwood box, created by a master craftsman from Jaipur, Rajasthan. The intricately carved flora and fauna patterns on the box showcase the use of sandalwood sourced from Mysore, Karnataka.
