Mumbai: Mukesh Ambani, the billionaire behind Reliance Industries, is contemplating a move into the wind energy sector, a potential disruption akin to his group's impact on the refinery, petrochemical, telecom, and retail industries.

Ambani's track record includes the creation of the world's largest grassroots petroleum refinery in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with its capacity more than doubling from 33 MTPA in 2010 to over 72 MTPA today.

In 2010, Ambani initiated the retail business, which has since grown into India's largest retail operation, known as Reliance Retail Ltd. The Jio brand, launched by RIL in 2016, has become the largest telecom operator in India. In 2020, RIL raised a record $20 billion by divesting stakes in its digital and retail ventures.

Under Mukesh Ambani's leadership, RIL's market capitalization has surged from $5.5 billion in 2002 to well over $200 billion at present.

With Ambani's recent announcement of ambitious wind energy plans, the industry could be on the verge of another major transformation.
