In a significant step forward for India's 'Make-in-India' campaign, Google has decided to join the ranks of industry giants such as Apple and Samsung by initiating the production of its latest smartphones within the country. This announcement was made during the 9th edition of the 'Google for India' event, with the presence of India's Electronics and IT Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw.

According to Rick Osterloh, Senior Vice President of Devices and Services at Google, the first batch of 'Made-in-India' Pixel smartphones will be available in 2024. To achieve this, Google is forming partnerships with both domestic and international manufacturers to produce its hardware in India. While the specific partners were not disclosed, earlier reports indicated discussions with prominent Indian suppliers such as Lava International Ltd, Dixon Technologies India, and Bharat FIH (the Indian unit of Foxconn Technology Group).

The Google Pixel 8, the company's latest hardware offering, was launched globally and in India just earlier this month. It is priced at Rs 75,999, with the Pixel 8 Pro retailing for Rs 1,06,999. Both models have been available for purchase since October 12.

Over recent years, India has become an increasingly appealing destination for manufacturing, not only for domestic consumption but also for export. Minister Ashwini Vaishnav noted that mobile manufacturing was virtually non-existent in the country nine years ago, but today, India boasts nearly $44 billion worth of manufacturing, with close to $11 billion in exports.

India's Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes have played a pivotal role in attracting global and local companies to commence manufacturing in the country. This trend is evident in the recent launches of the iPhone 15 and various Samsung smartphones, including the Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Flip 5, all being produced in India.

In addition to the Google Pixel, Google's Chromebooks will also be manufactured in India. Just last month, PC market leader HP partnered with Google to produce Chromebooks in India. Chromebooks are affordable PCs running Google's Chromebook OS, known for their built-in accessibility and security features.
