According to Ookla, India has surpassed developed countries like the UK and Japan in mobile speed. With the introduction of 5G services, India's mobile speed performance has increased by 3.59 times. This boost in speed has propelled India to the 47th position in the Speedtest Global Index, leaving countries like Japan, the UK, and Brazil behind.
India has also outperformed neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan, as well as several G20 nations, including Mexico (90th), Turkey (68th), the UK (62nd), Japan (58th), Brazil (50th), and South Africa (48th).

Ookla reports that mobile speed performance has significantly improved since the advent of 5G, with median download speeds rising from 13.87 Mbps in September 2022 to 50.21 Mbps in August 2023.
"This improvement has led to India's rise in the Speedtest Global Index, moving up 72 places, from 119th place to the 47th position," stated Ookla.
The deployment of 5G has enhanced the overall user experience across all telecom circles, with significant investments in backhaul infrastructure by operators.
Major Indian telecom companies like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have contributed to the substantial increase in 5G subscribers. They began implementing 5G technology in October 2022 following the acquisition of 5G spectrum licenses.
While network speeds were still in the early testing stages, median download speeds ranged from 512.57 Mbps in Gujarat to 19.23 Mbps in Uttar Pradesh West across various telecom circles. However, by August 2023, median 5G download speeds exceeded 240 Mbps in all areas, with Kolkata leading the way at 385.50 Mbps, as reported by Ookla Insights Article.
