Google emphasized AI safety as the Indian government plans new regulations to detect and curb deepfake proliferation.

On Thursday, Google reaffirmed its commitment to collaborate with the Indian Government and industry stakeholders in promoting ethical development of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This commitment followed a meeting between IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and representatives from major social media platforms and other stakeholders.

Vaishnaw expressed the government's intention to create new regulations to identify and restrict the spread of deepfakes. Following the meeting with various stakeholders, including social media platforms, Nasscom, and AI professors, Vaishnaw stated, "Deepfakes have emerged as a new threat to democracy, weakening trust in society and its institutions."

"We'll start drafting regulations today for deepfakes, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing synthetic from genuine content. Google is committed to developing tools and protocols, collaborating with the government and industry for responsible AI," stated a government official and a Google spokesperson.

Google underscores its commitment to AI development that prioritizes societal benefits and proactively tackles potential challenges, aligning with its AI principles. The company also highlights its continuous efforts to create tools and frameworks that combat technology misuse and empower individuals to assess online information more effectively. By investing in technologies like watermarking and synthetic audio detection, Google aims to enhance content identification, making online navigation safer for users.
