Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal Tours Tesla Factory, Announces Plans for Increased Component Imports from India
On Monday, November 14, 2023, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, visited Tesla’s manufacturing facility in Fremont, California. During the visit, Goyal disclosed that the U.S. electric car manufacturer is set to double its component imports from India. This development aligns with ongoing discussions about the Indian government's efforts to attract Tesla and other automakers by considering reductions in import tariffs on electric vehicles (EVs).
Expressing his pride, Goyal acknowledged the growing significance of Indian auto component suppliers in Tesla's EV supply chain. He was pleased to witness Indian engineers and finance professionals holding senior positions and actively contributing to Tesla's transformative journey in mobility.
Taking to the social media platform X, Goyal shared, "Visited @Tesla’s cutting-edge manufacturing facility at Fremont, California. Delighted to witness the exceptional contributions of talented Indian engineers and finance professionals in senior roles, propelling Tesla's remarkable journey in revolutionizing mobility. Additionally, I am proud to see the increasing importance of auto component suppliers from India in Tesla's EV supply chain. The company is on track to double its component imports from India. Regrettably missed Mr. @ElonMusk's magnetic presence and wish him a speedy recovery."
Musk replied to Goyal's tweet, expressing, "It was a privilege to have you visit Tesla! My apologies for not being able to travel to California today, but I anticipate meeting you on a future occasion."
Currently on a visit to the United States from November 13 to 16, Goyal arrived in San Francisco on Monday morning. He is scheduled to participate in the third in-person Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) Ministerial meeting from November 13-14, 2023. Additionally, Goyal will attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in San Francisco.
Upon his recent arrival in the US, Goyal held a meeting with Singapore’s Minister for Trade and Industry, Gan Kim Yong. The discussions between the two leaders focused on ways to expedite collaboration across various sectors, aiming to strengthen the economic partnership between India and Singapore. Goyal shared his meeting details on X, stating, “Met H.E. Gan Kim Yong, Minister of Trade & Industry, Singapore, and discussed ways to expedite cooperation across sectors to deepen our economic partnership further.”
