"Gurgaon's Unique Shopping Habits Unveiled: Insights from Blinkit Founder Albinder Dhindsa on 2023 Sales Trends"
Blinkit founder Albinder Dhindsa recently revealed intriguing sales trends from 2023 in Gurgaon, shedding light on the city's distinctive preferences in purchasing. According to Dhindsa's LinkedIn post, Gurgaon placed more orders for tonic waters than soft drinks throughout the year, in addition to purchasing 65,973 lighters through Blinkit.
The disclosed data showcased evolving consumer behavior and highlighted popular product choices, revealing intriguing insights into daily essentials. Notably, the quick commerce firm delivered a substantial quantity of 30,02,080 PartySmart tablets designed to mitigate morning hangovers after alcohol consumption, along with 8,50,011 ice cube packets.
Among the intriguing individual orders in 2023, one standout was an order from South Delhi for 9,940 condoms, while another customer from Bengaluru requested an iPhone 15 Pro Max, a packet of Lay’s chips, and six bananas – a wish seemingly granted by the 'Blinkit genie.'
Dhindsa's post also highlighted significant orders, including a notable purchase of an iPhone Pro Max worth Rs 1,59,900 and an order for 18 copies of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,' indicating the continued popularity of the series. Additionally, the report mentioned delivering 351,033 printouts before 8 am in the same year.
In terms of daily essential items, the sales data indicated substantial orders, such as 3,20,04,725 packets of Maggi after midnight, 21,167 units of Boroline throughout the year, 45,16,490 ENO sachets, and 1,22,38,740 ice creams in 2023.
Furthermore, intriguing orders included 101 liters of mineral water, 4832 bathing soaps, 183 shades of lipsticks, and 17,009 kgs of rice, showcasing diverse consumer preferences. Another surprising revelation was a user ordering a total of 3,348 bottles of tomato ketchup in 2023.
Moreover, miscellaneous items like tissues, toothbrushes, red chilies, Odomos tubes, etc., were also in demand. Orders ranged from 3,18,480 tissues and 2,670 toothbrushes to 375 kg of red chilies and 483 Odomos tubes throughout the year.
The data also revealed unusual purchases, such as 38 underwear in a month, 972 mobile chargers, 134 UNO packs, and approximately 2,381 Red Bull cans in 2023. Notably, consumers also turned to online platforms for products like plants, with one individual ordering 1,149 plants throughout the year. Additionally, Blinkit delivered a surprising total of 2,19,612 cow dung cakes in 2023.
In a separate development, Zomato expressed optimism regarding Blinkit's potential for profitability compared to its core food delivery business. Zomato acquired Blinkit (formerly Grofers) in August last year and witnessed consistent growth in its gross order value (GOV) every quarter, with Blinkit's GOV growing at over 80% year-on-year. Zomato anticipates Blinkit's GOV potentially surpassing its own in overlapping cities, compensating for Zomato's wider geographical presence.
