China's OPPO and Finnish Nokia have officially put an end to their prolonged patent dispute by entering into a comprehensive global cross-license agreement. The disagreement, primarily centered around 5G patent portfolios, had led to numerous legal battles across various countries. OPPO had faced setbacks, including the suspension of smartphone sales and removal of products from e-commerce platforms in certain regions due to the failure to reach a consensus with Nokia on the use of their 5G patent technology.

In a press release issued on January 24, OPPO disclosed the global patent cross-license pact with Nokia, encompassing standard-essential patents related to 5G and other cellular communication technologies. As part of the agreement, both companies have committed to resolving all ongoing litigation across different jurisdictions.

Feng Ying, Chief Intellectual Property Officer at OPPO, expressed satisfaction with the agreement, highlighting the inclusion of cross-licensing for 5G standard-essential patents. Ying emphasized the significance of the deal, citing it as a manifestation of mutual recognition and respect for each other's intellectual property. Additionally, he underscored the agreement's role in establishing a foundation for future collaboration between OPPO and Nokia. OPPO remains an advocate for fair royalty fees and a forward-looking approach to intellectual property matters, promoting dispute resolution through amicable negotiations and a shared appreciation for the value of intellectual property.

Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies, echoed the sentiments of mutual respect for intellectual property in the cross-license agreement with OPPO. Lukander highlighted the agreement's importance in providing long-term financial stability to Nokia's licensing business, alongside other significant smartphone agreements reached over the past year.
