Google’s Gemini AI Now Available in Gmail and Google Messages

Google has announced the deployment of its advanced AI model, Gemini, in Gmail and Google Messages. This strategic rollout aims to enhance user experience by providing smart, AI-driven functionalities across its platforms. The Gemini 1.5 Pro AI model will soon be expanded to other Google products such as Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive.

Innovative Uses of Google Gemini in Gmail:

Quick Summarization:

Gemini can swiftly summarize lengthy email threads or data-heavy emails. To use this feature, open the email thread, find the Gemini icon on the sidebar (desktop) or tap the three-dot menu (mobile), and select "Summarize." The AI tool will analyze the conversation, highlight key points, and present a concise summary. This feature is particularly useful for catching up on extensive discussions or quickly grasping the context of an email.

Smart Replies:

Gemini aids in composing smart replies to emails. After opening an email and clicking the “Reply” button, look for the Gemini icon or prompt within the compose window. The AI will analyze the email, understand its purpose, and generate a suitable reply. Users will also get multiple reply options to choose from, saving time and ensuring accurate responses.

Important Suggestions:

Designed to anticipate user needs, Gemini can suggest setting reminders for meetings or events mentioned in emails. Additionally, if an email references a document or spreadsheet, Gemini might prompt the user to attach the relevant file from Google Drive. These suggestions help organize work more efficiently.

Quick Information Retrieval:

Gemini can extract crucial information from email exchanges without needing the subject line. By accessing the inbox and activating Gemini, users can ask natural language questions like, "What was the deadline Divya mentioned for the marketing campaign?" The AI will search through Gmail history and Google Drive (if enabled) to find relevant information.

Supercharged Research:

Gemini can gather publicly available information about a person or company from an introduction email, providing valuable context for personalized follow-up. It can also create graphs or bar charts to summarize data from emails, facilitating better understanding.

These features are available to Google Workspace customers with a Gemini Business or Enterprise add-on, a Gemini Education or Education Premium add-on, or to Google One AI Premium subscribers.

Gemini in Google Messages:

Gemini is also integrated into Google Messages for Android users, with many in India already accessing the new feature. Users must consent to allow Gemini to access their chats for further training and review, though these chats will be de-linked from their Google account.

The new Gemini chatbot in Messages is available on smartphones including Pixel 6 or later, Pixel Fold, Samsung Galaxy S22 or later, and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip or Z Fold. Eligible devices must have 6GB of RAM or higher.
