Synopsis: Instagram, owned by Meta, faced a significant global outage affecting users worldwide, including India, where thousands reported issues accessing features like Reels and feed updates. The outage sparked widespread frustration and humorous reactions on social media platforms like Twitter.
On Saturday, Instagram, the renowned photo and video-sharing platform owned by Meta, experienced a significant global outage that impacted users across various regions, including a substantial number in India. Users reported widespread difficulties accessing essential features such as Reels and feed updates.
According to Downdetector, a website that tracks online outages, over 6,500 reports from users in India were logged at the peak of the disruption around 12:02 p.m. The majority of complaints (58%) were related to problems with the feed, 32% involved issues with the app itself, and 10% were due to server connection difficulties.
The outage affected users in major Indian cities such as Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai, among others. Frustrated users found themselves unable to log in, scroll through their feeds, or load Reels. In response, many took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice their frustrations and seek confirmation that the issue was widespread.
One user humorously noted, "Everyone going towards Twitter to check if Instagram is down," highlighting the common practice of turning to other platforms for answers during outages. The incident led to a flurry of humorous and exasperated posts, with users sharing their experiences and observations.
"I thought my Instagram got hacked because there's no way my fyp looks like this. It's all brain rot usually #instagramdown," another user exclaimed, referencing the unusual content that appeared during the outage. Another echoed this sentiment, stating, "Me going to Twitter to check if it's only my Instagram that's down, or we all are suffering #instagramdown."
As of now, the cause of the global outage remains unclear, and Instagram has yet to issue an official statement addressing the issue or providing an estimated time for a resolution.
