Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024 LIVE: Mahayuti surges ahead with a commanding lead as Congress faces a major setback

As the votes for Maharashtra's 288-seat Assembly election are being counted, the state witnessed an impressive voter turnout of 65.02%, slightly higher than the 2019 election's 61.74%.

The Sillod constituency in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district topped turnout charts with 70.46%, while Jalna led in overall district participation at 64.17%.

The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance, comprising BJP, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), and Ajit Pawar's NCP, is emerging as a frontrunner, with early trends suggesting they have surpassed the halfway mark.

However, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), including Congress, NCP (Sharad Pawar), and the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction), remains a formidable challenger.

Exit polls largely forecasted a Mahayuti win, though internal leadership disagreements could complicate governance.

Notably, Ajit Pawar’s portrayal on local posters as the next Chief Minister raised eyebrows, reflecting potential friction within the ruling bloc.

This election also saw an increase in polling stations, from 96,654 in 2019 to 1,00,186 this year, alongside heightened security around counting centers in key cities like Mumbai.

With over 4,136 candidates, the contest featured intense competition, including from rebel candidates in 150+ constituencies.

In conclusion, the Maharashtra Assembly elections present a decisive moment for the state.

While the BJP-led Mahayuti appears set to retain power, the real challenge lies in forming a stable government within the 72-hour deadline before the Assembly's term ends.

Leadership negotiations, especially within alliances, will determine the political landscape.
Meanwhile, the state's high voter engagement signals a robust democratic process.
