Sensex Slides 200 Points Amid Geo-Tensions; Smallcaps Shine in a Volatile Session

Indian markets opened in the red on Thursday, April 24, 2025, as geopolitical jitters rattled investor sentiment. The BSE Sensex dropped 181 points to 79,935, while the Nifty50 slipped by 44 points to 24,284 in early trade. The weakness came after India announced diplomatic and economic actions against Pakistan, following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir.

While large-cap indices faced headwinds, smallcaps managed to stay in the green, with the Nifty Smallcap 100 up 0.46%, and midcaps remained mostly flat. The divergence points to a cautious yet opportunistic tone among investors seeking value in broader markets.

Among the top losers were HUL, Bharti Airtel, and ICICI Bank, each weighing heavily on the Sensex. Meanwhile, all eyes are on the monthly expiry of Nifty F&O contracts, which could add volatility through the session.

Additionally, investors are tracking Q4 earnings from Tech Mahindra and Nestle India, with expectations running high for solid performances.

Market Insights: Ajit Mishra, SVP at Religare Broking, stated:

“We maintain our positive outlook on the Nifty and recommend continuing with a ‘buy on dips’ approach. Strong support is expected between the 23,700–23,800 zone.”

From a macro view, BNP Paribas' India research head Kunal Vora noted that India’s growing GDP and strong earnings recovery have positioned it as a top choice among emerging markets, despite global trade complexities.

In the primary markets, Tankup Engineers IPO entered its second day of subscription on the NSE SME platform, drawing retail investor interest.
