Synopsis: Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock, outpaced tech giants like Elon Musk and Bill Gates in earnings with a staggering $36.7 million income in 2024. His record-breaking pay reflects BlackRock’s strong performance, but not all shareholders are thrilled.
When we think of the highest-paid individuals in the business world, names like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, or Sundar Pichai usually top the list. But in 2024, someone else quietly took the lead — Larry Fink, Chairman and CEO of BlackRock, the world’s largest asset management firm.
Fink’s total compensation reached a staggering $36.7 million (over Rs 227 crore) last year, surpassing even the tech titans. According to Fortune, his base salary stayed constant at $1.5 million (approx. Rs 12.7 crore), but his cash bonus increased to $10.6 million from $7.9 million, and stock awards rose to $24.6 million, up from $16.4 million in 2023 — a 33% jump overall.
Why Is Larry Fink Earning So Much?
The surge in compensation directly correlates with BlackRock’s record-breaking profits in 2024. Founded in 1988, the firm manages trillions of dollars in assets and plays a central role in global finance. BlackRock cited its philosophy of "performance-based pay" as the reason for the hike, stating its leadership team delivered value to both clients and shareholders.
However, this pay rise hasn’t come without criticism. Only 59% of BlackRock’s shareholders approved of the executive pay plan last year — a sharp drop from the 93% average over the past decade. Proxy advisory firm ISS flagged the issue, stating that BlackRock failed to address shareholder concerns effectively.
In its defense, BlackRock mentioned that it engaged with investors representing 65% of its shares to discuss the matter and clarified that it did not issue any one-time stock option awards in 2024, a practice for which it had been previously criticized.
The Man Behind the Money
Larry Fink isn’t just another high-profile CEO — he is one of the most influential figures in the financial world. Under his leadership, BlackRock has become a powerhouse, influencing everything from corporate governance to climate policy through its massive investment holdings. His earnings reflect not just company profits but his global influence in shaping economic trends.
Despite the controversy, Larry Fink’s income puts him ahead of some of the most famous billionaires in the world, proving that sometimes, the real financial heavyweights aren’t in Silicon Valley — they’re on Wall Street.
