Synopsis : India strengthens its position as a locomotive manufacturing hub as the Marhowra Plant in Bihar exports its first state-of-the-art locomotive to Guinea. This milestone comes as Banaras Locomotive Works crosses 10,000 units built and 174 units exported, marking India’s steady expansion in the global rail market.
India’s locomotive exports have gained fresh momentum as the Marhowra Plant in Bihar, apart from Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), has started exporting globally. On June 20, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off a state-of-the-art locomotive built at the Marhowra Plant for export to the Republic of Guinea, marking the plant’s first international dispatch.
The Banaras Locomotive Works, established on 23 April 1956, has played a pivotal role in India’s rail manufacturing strength, producing over 10,000 locomotives for Indian Railways, steel plants, mines, ports, and exports. In January 1976, BLW exported its first locomotive to Tanzania, setting the stage for exports to countries such as Vietnam, Mali, Senegal, Angola, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Mozambique, and Sudan.
So far, BLW has exported a total of 174 locomotives globally, reinforcing India’s commitment to expanding its manufacturing footprint in the rail sector. This push aligns with India’s ambition to become a reliable supplier of advanced locomotives to developing economies seeking to upgrade their rail infrastructure, while simultaneously boosting India’s Make in India and export-led growth initiatives.
