McDonald’s Faces Weeklong Boycott in the US Over Tax, Labor, and DEI Rollbacks

Global fast food giant McDonald’s has become the target of a week-long nationwide boycott in the United States starting June 24 to June 30, 2025. The campaign, spearheaded by The People’s Union USA, a prominent consumer advocacy group, accuses McDonald’s of corporate hypocrisy, tax evasion, unfair labor practices, and scaling back Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

In a strongly worded Instagram post, the group stated that the boycott is a call to hold large corporations accountable for actions that harm both workers and society. “McDonald’s can’t claim to be a people-first company while slashing DEI policies and exploiting its labor force,” the post read.

The People’s Union, led by activist John Schwarz, has also outlined a series of future boycotts aimed at other major corporations:
  • July 1–31: Boycott of Starbucks, Amazon, and Home Depot
  • August 1–31: Boycott of Walmart, McDonald’s (again), and Lowe’s
  • July 4: A national economic blackout day urging consumers to spend nothing.

These actions follow rising tensions in the US surrounding DEI programs, especially after Donald Trump’s return to the presidency in 2025. Trump has previously slammed DEI initiatives introduced during the Biden administration, calling them "radical and wasteful", advocating instead for hiring based on “merit and skill.”

The backlash comes at a time when McDonald’s and several large corporations are scaling back their DEI commitments, citing cost and efficiency concerns. Critics, however, argue that these rollbacks represent a broader retreat from inclusivity and social responsibility.

Whether or not the boycott will significantly impact McDonald’s operations remains to be seen, but it underscores growing consumer activism and public scrutiny of corporate ethics in post-election America.
