Punjab’s Rose-Scented Litchis Make Global Debut, Flagged Off to Qatar and UAE

In a significant boost for India’s horticultural exports, the country has flagged off its first international consignment of rose-scented litchis from Pathankot, Punjab, to Doha, Qatar, and Dubai, UAE. Dispatched on June 23, 2025, the shipment comprised one metric tonne to Qatar and 0.5 metric tonne to the UAE, according to a statement by the Commerce & Industry Ministry.

This milestone initiative was led by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) in collaboration with the Department of Horticulture, Punjab, and supported by Lullu Group. Progressive farmer Shri Prabhat Singh of Sujanpur, known for cultivating premium produce, supplied the litchis, ensuring the quality meets global standards.

Pathankot’s emergence as a litchi export hub is attributed to its favourable climate and increasing production, with Punjab contributing 12.39% to India’s total litchi output in FY 2023–24. The state produced 71,490 metric tonnes of litchis, cultivated across 4,327 hectares, positioning it as a key player in India’s horticultural landscape. India’s total litchi exports during the same period stood at 639.53 metric tonnes, and the current shipment is expected to open more avenues for farmers seeking to diversify their markets.

The global demand for fresh fruits like cherries, jamun, and litchis is on the rise, aligning with India’s push to diversify agri-exports and enhance competitiveness in premium fresh produce categories. India’s agri-exports touched USD 3.87 billion in FY 2024–25, reflecting a 5.67% increase year-on-year, and such targeted exports will further strengthen India’s position in global markets while empowering local farmers with better income opportunities.

This shipment also aligns with the Government’s broader vision to empower farmers by connecting them to high-value global markets, improving cold-chain infrastructure, and promoting India’s fresh produce as a premium category globally. As Punjab’s rose-scented litchis find new markets in the Middle East, it sets the stage for expanded horticulture exports and reaffirms India’s commitment to becoming a significant player in global fresh produce exports.
