Tata Steel Targets 20% Diverse Workforce by 2028, Marking a Decade of Inclusion

Tata Steel is taking a significant step forward in building a more inclusive workplace, announcing its aim to achieve 20% diversity in its workforce across the group by 2028. This announcement comes as the company commemorates a decade of MOSAIC, its flagship diversity and inclusion initiative launched in 2015, reinforcing its commitment during Pride Month to foster a workplace where all individuals can thrive.

For Tata Steel, diversity goes beyond policy—it is about challenging and reshaping norms within traditionally male-dominated sectors. The company has implemented progressive HR policies, offering equal benefits for LGBTQIA+ partners, gender-neutral parental leave, gender transition support, and inclusive relocation benefits, establishing itself as a leader in people-centric policies.

MOSAIC, anchored in five strategic pillars—recruitment, sensitisation, retention and development, infrastructure, and celebration—addresses the unique needs of diverse communities, including women, persons with disabilities, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and affirmative action groups. This initiative has driven impactful programs such as the Women of Mettle scholarship, Women@Mines, Queerious case study competitions, integration of transgender HEMM operators, Ananta Quest for students with disabilities, and onboarding India’s first all-women mining shift at Noamundi in 2024.

Atrayee Sanyal, Chief People Officer at Tata Steel, highlighted that the company’s focus has always been on fostering a purpose-driven, equitable, and inclusive workplace where individuals are valued for who they are and empowered to contribute meaningfully.

By embedding inclusion in its daily practices, Tata Steel continues to break industry stereotypes, paving the way for a workplace where diversity fuels creativity, productivity, and growth, setting a benchmark for the broader manufacturing and mining industries in India.
