Muted Markets as Jane Street Faces Ban: Nifty Holds 25,400, Small & Midcaps Swing

On Friday, July 4, Indian equity indices opened on a muted note as investors digested the news of Jane Street’s ban from the Indian stock market. The NSE Nifty 50 stayed firm above 25,400, while the BSE Sensex edged up 57 points to 83,300.

This regulatory action introduced uncertainty in institutional trading activity. However, early optimism surrounding global cues and speculation about an India–US trade deal helped limit broader losses.

Key Market Highlights:

Bank Nifty advanced 70 points to 56,861, signaling modest optimism in financials.

The Nifty Midcap 100 and SmallCap indices opened weak but reversed higher, with the Midcap index gaining 200 points (+0.33%) to 59,882.

Shriram Finance

Early Laggards:

Global Market Pulse:

US markets rallied overnight on upbeat jobs data but were closed on July 4 for Independence Day. Asia-Pacific indices saw mixed moves — Japan’s Nikkei was flat, while the Topix index gained 0.15%.

Technical Outlook:

According to Shrikant Chouhan from Kotak Securities, the market is consolidating with a cautious tone:

“Below 25,500, market sentiment remains weak. A fall below 25,370 may lead to 25,300–25,200. On the flip side, a move above 25,500 could trigger a bounce towards 25,600, and further gains if 25,670 is breached.”

Traders are advised to remain nimble, with focus on key levels and macro news, especially around the upcoming IndiaUS tariff negotiations.
