PM Modi Urges Sanctions Against Terrorists, Charts 5-Point Vision for a Stronger BRICS

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at the BRICS Summit in Brazil, strongly advocated for sanctions against terrorists, asserting that terror attacks must be condemned as a matter of principle, not convenience. Addressing the session on peace and security, PM Modi emphasized that "terrorism is the most serious challenge for humanity today."

Referring to the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22, which claimed 26 civilian lives, PM Modi expressed gratitude to friendly nations for their support. He underlined that supporters and victims of terrorism must not be judged by the same standard and criticized countries that provide indirect support to terror for political gains.

“Condemning terrorism should be our principle, not just a convenience. There must be no hesitation in imposing sanctions on terrorists,” Modi said, making a subtle reference to China’s past actions at the UN Security Council where it blocked the listing of Pakistan-based terrorists.

Reinforcing India’s philosophy of peace, PM Modi noted, “India is the land of Lord Buddha and Mahatma Gandhi. For us, there is no place for war and violence.”

Modi’s 5-Point Agenda to Strengthen BRICS:

1. Internal Reform for Credibility:

BRICS nations must enhance their internal governance systems to build credibility when advocating for multilateral reforms.

2. Strengthen BRICS NDB (New Development Bank):

The bank should focus on demand-driven decision-making, long-term sustainability, and maintaining a strong credit rating.

3. Agricultural and Scientific Collaboration:

Through India’s BRICS Agricultural Research Platform and a proposed Science & Research Repository, nations of the Global South can benefit from shared innovations and technology.

4. Resilient Supply Chains:

Modi called for non-monopolistic, equitable access to global resources, warning against using them as political weapons.

5. Responsible AI and Leadership by Example:

PM Modi stressed that BRICS must lead global discourse on AI ethics and follow a ‘Lead by Example’ approach for future collaboration.

Reaffirming India's commitment to peace and development, Modi concluded that BRICS has a crucial role in ensuring a secure and inclusive world.
