Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met a delegation of the 16th Finance Commission (XVIFC), led by its Chairman Dr. Arvind Panagariya. During the meeting, the Commission submitted a comprehensive report covering the five-year period beginning April 1, 2026. The report includes major recommendations on the distribution of net tax proceeds between the Union and the States, state-wise allocation of shares, grants-in-aid, and a review of funding arrangements for disaster management initiatives.
PM Modi shared about the meeting on X, saying, “Met a delegation of the 16th Finance Commission members led by Arvind Panagariya, the Chairman of the Commission.”
Before meeting the Prime Minister, the XVIFC members had already submitted their report to President Droupadi Murmu and also presented a copy to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
Throughout its tenure, the Commission conducted an in-depth analysis of the financial conditions of both the Union and State Governments. It held extensive consultations with central and state authorities, local governments across different tiers, former Finance Commission members, reputed academic institutions, multilateral organisations, the Advisory Council, and other subject experts to compile its findings.
According to an official statement, the report will be made public once the Finance Minister tables it in Parliament, as mandated under Article 281 of the Constitution.
The 16th Finance Commission was constituted by the President of India and is headed by Chairman Dr. Arvind Panagariya. The other members include Annie George Mathew, Dr. Manoj Panda, T. Rabi Sankar, Dr. Soumyakanti Ghosh, and Secretary Ritvik Pandey.
