Synopsis : Commercial LPG users faced a massive price hike as 19-kg cylinders became costlier by ₹993 from May 1. However, petrol, diesel, and domestic LPG prices remain unchanged, offering relief to households.
In a major fuel price revision, the cost of 19-kg commercial LPG cylinders has been sharply increased by ₹993, effective May 1, amid rising international energy prices linked to escalating West Asia tensions.
While commercial users face a significant burden, domestic consumers remain protected as prices of petrol, diesel, and 14.2-kg household LPG cylinders have been left unchanged.
New LPG Prices from May 1
According to Indian Oil Corporation, the revised rates are:
- Delhi: ₹3,071.50 per 19-kg cylinder
- Mumbai: ₹3,024 per 19-kg cylinder
This marks one of the steepest recent hikes in commercial LPG rates.
Mini LPG Cylinder Also Costlier
The price of 5-kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders has also increased by ₹261 per cylinder.
These smaller cylinders are widely used by:
- Migrant workers
- Small eateries
- Urban low-consumption households
- Businesses with limited space
Why Prices Have Increased
The hike comes as global fuel prices continue to rise due to ongoing conflict in West Asia, impacting crude oil and gas supply chains.
Major Reasons:
- Rising international LPG and crude prices
- Supply concerns from West Asia
- Higher import costs
- Currency fluctuations
Impact on Businesses
The increase is expected to raise costs for:
- Restaurants
- Hotels
- Street food vendors
- Bakeries
- Small commercial kitchens
Many businesses may be forced to absorb costs or pass them on to consumers.
Domestic Consumers Get Relief
Despite rising global energy prices, authorities have kept these unchanged:
- Petrol prices
- Diesel prices
- 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinders
This move helps contain inflation and protects household budgets.
Recent LPG Price Trend
Commercial LPG prices have already seen multiple hikes this year:
- March 1: +₹28
- March 7: +₹114.5
- April: +₹196
- May 1: +₹993
Total increase since January: ₹1,491
ATF and Bulk Diesel Revised
Indian Oil Corporation also confirmed upward adjustments in:
- Bulk diesel prices
- Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) for international airline operations
Market Outlook
Fuel prices may remain volatile depending on:
- West Asia geopolitical developments
- Crude oil prices
- Shipping disruptions
- Government policy decisions
Conclusion
The sharp rise in commercial LPG prices is a major blow to businesses already facing cost pressures. While households have been shielded for now, continued global energy volatility could keep fuel markets under pressure.
