Synopsis : Tata Group's fashion retailer Westside is preparing for its biggest expansion drive yet, with plans to open up to 100 new stores annually—nearly double its current pace. Backed by parent company Trent Ltd. the premium fashion brand is looking to accelerate growth through aggressive store expansion, stronger digital presence, AI-driven operations and faster product launches as it aims to become the next major growth engine for the company.
Westside, the premium fashion and lifestyle retail brand owned by Tata Group's Trent Ltd., is gearing up for its most ambitious expansion strategy to date. The company plans to open as many as 100 new stores every year, significantly accelerating its retail footprint as it seeks to strengthen its position in India's rapidly growing fashion market.
Speaking about the expansion plans, Trent Chief Executive Officer Shailina Parti said the company has traditionally opened between 10 and 15 Westside stores annually. However, with the brand witnessing strong customer acceptance and an upgraded business model, the retailer now believes it is ready to scale at a much faster pace.
Westside currently operates around 300 stores across India and offers a wide range of products, including apparel, footwear, beauty products, home décor, accessories and even lab-grown diamond jewellery. The company plans to expand into newer markets, particularly the northeastern states, while also increasing its presence in major metropolitan cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
According to the management, Westside's strategy goes beyond simply selling products. The company aims to create a fashion-first shopping experience that encourages customers to make spontaneous purchases by continuously refreshing its product portfolio with stylish and affordable offerings.
The aggressive expansion comes at an important time for Trent. Its value-fashion chain Zudio, which has been the company's primary growth driver over the past few years, has started witnessing moderation in revenue growth amid increasing competition from major retailers such as Reliance Industries and Aditya Birla Group. As a result, investors and analysts are increasingly looking at Westside to drive the next phase of the company's growth.
Consumer demand has remained somewhat cautious due to inflationary pressures and higher living costs, while retailers continue to face challenges related to premium retail space availability. These factors have weighed on Trent's share price, which remains significantly below its peak despite the company's continued expansion efforts.
Despite these challenges, several market analysts remain optimistic about Westside's long-term prospects. Research firm Bernstein recently highlighted the brand's successful transformation in store design, merchandising and customer experience, suggesting that Westside has the potential to become India's leading department store format as several competing retailers continue to struggle financially.
To support its ambitious expansion plans, Trent's board earlier approved a fundraising programme worth Rs 25 billion. A significant portion of the capital will be utilised for expanding the company's retail network, strengthening supply chain capabilities and investing in Westside's growing online business. The company is also exploring international opportunities as part of its long-term strategy.
Digital commerce has become another major focus area for Westside. The retailer aims to increase the contribution of online sales from around 6 per cent currently to nearly 10 per cent of its total revenue over the coming years. This reflects the company's efforts to build a stronger omnichannel presence by integrating physical stores with digital shopping platforms.
Technology is also playing an increasingly important role in Westside's operations. The company has started deploying artificial intelligence across several business functions, including product design, warehouse management and supply chain optimisation. According to the management, its new AI-powered design tools have significantly improved productivity, enabling its in-house design team to create nearly 400 to 500 new product designs every week compared to around 50 earlier.
Westside is also working to shorten its production cycle for fashion products. The company aims to reduce the lead time for trendy collections to just 30 days, allowing it to respond more quickly to changing consumer preferences and emerging fashion trends.
The accelerated expansion strategy reflects Tata Group's confidence in India's long-term retail growth story. Rising disposable incomes, increasing urbanisation, growing fashion awareness and the rapid adoption of organised retail continue to create significant opportunities for premium lifestyle brands across the country.
If executed successfully, Westside's ambitious store rollout, combined with its digital investments and technology-driven operations, could position the brand as one of India's fastest-growing premium fashion retailers and an increasingly important contributor to Trent's future growth.
