Bharti Airtel Shares Gain After Strong Q1; Robust Wireless Growth, Higher ARPU Keep Outlook Positive

Bharti Airtel Ltd. shares witnessed strong buying interest after the company announced better-than-expected financial results for the April-June quarter (Q1FY27). Investors welcomed the telecom operator's continued growth in its core wireless business, improving profitability and resilient performance across international operations. The stock surged over 3 per cent during intraday trade before settling with healthy gains, reflecting positive market sentiment following the earnings announcement.

The company reported a 37.3 per cent year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 8,167 crore during the quarter, while consolidated revenue rose 18.4 per cent to Rs 58,539 crore compared with the same period last year. The strong earnings were driven by higher mobile tariffs, an improving subscriber mix, growing data consumption and steady expansion across multiple business segments.

One of the biggest highlights of the quarter was Airtel's continued improvement in Average Revenue Per User (ARPU), one of the most closely watched profitability indicators in the telecom industry. ARPU increased to Rs 264 per month, compared with Rs 257 in the previous quarter and Rs 250 in the year-ago period. The steady improvement reflects the company's strategy of focusing on premium customers, higher-value plans and migration of subscribers towards 4G and 5G services.

Importantly, Airtel continued to maintain a significant lead over Reliance Jio on the ARPU front, with Jio reporting an ARPU of Rs 215.6 during the same period. The higher ARPU highlights Airtel's ability to generate better revenue from each subscriber while maintaining customer loyalty through premium offerings and superior network quality.

The company's India wireless business continued to perform strongly, supported by healthy subscriber additions and growing adoption of data services. Airtel added 1.05 million postpaid subscribers during the quarter, representing a 13 per cent year-on-year increase. Postpaid users generally contribute higher revenues and lower churn, making them an important driver of long-term profitability.

Airtel also added nearly 5 million 4G and 5G subscribers during the quarter, reflecting continued migration from legacy networks to high-speed mobile services. As smartphone penetration rises and demand for digital services accelerates, the company expects premium data users to remain a major source of future revenue growth.

The company's India operations generated Rs 41,214 crore in revenue during Q1FY27, registering a 9.7 per cent year-on-year increase. Growth was supported by expanding mobile services, enterprise solutions, digital offerings, broadband services and increasing customer engagement across its ecosystem.

Brokerage firm Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOFSL) maintained a positive outlook on the company, stating that Airtel continues to outperform in its India wireless business while delivering another strong quarter in its Africa operations. According to the brokerage, Airtel's improving subscriber quality, expanding margins and consistent execution continue to support its long-term investment case.

The Africa business remained another key growth engine during the quarter. Airtel Africa delivered healthy double-digit revenue and EBITDA growth in constant currency terms, while favourable foreign exchange movements further boosted reported earnings. The company's diversified geographic presence continues to reduce dependence on any single market while providing additional growth opportunities.

Although capital expenditure remained elevated during the quarter, analysts viewed the spending positively as it supports future network expansion. Reported capital expenditure increased 61 per cent year-on-year, largely due to front-loaded investments in Africa, while cash capital expenditure rose 24 per cent. Despite the higher investment cycle, Airtel continued to generate healthy free cash flow, demonstrating the strength of its operating cash generation.

The company's broadband and home services business continued to expand, although growth moderated slightly due to higher Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) customer premises equipment (CPE) costs. Even so, Airtel remains well positioned to benefit from rising demand for high-speed broadband services across urban and semi-urban India.

During the quarter, earnings were impacted by an exceptional charge of Rs 353.4 crore relating to the proposed settlement of a commercial dispute involving one of the group's subsidiaries. However, this was largely offset by an exceptional gain of Rs 389.8 crore following a favourable legal order concerning business losses from previous years, limiting the overall impact on profitability.

Industry analysts believe Airtel remains one of the strongest telecom players in India due to its premium customer base, expanding digital ecosystem, disciplined capital allocation and leadership in network quality. Continued growth in 5G adoption, enterprise services, digital businesses and international operations is expected to support earnings momentum over the coming years.

With rising ARPU, strong subscriber additions, healthy cash flows and sustained investment in next-generation telecom infrastructure, Bharti Airtel appears well positioned to maintain its growth trajectory. Analysts expect further monetisation of 5G services, expanding broadband penetration and increasing digital consumption to remain key catalysts for the company's long-term performance.
