Stocks making biggest moves midday Lenskart, BEML, NMDC and more

Indian benchmark indices remained under pressure by midday on Tuesday, August 18, with the Nifty 50 hovering around 24,195 and the BSE Sensex near 77,348.

While the broader market remained subdued, several individual stocks attracted significant attention. Lenskart Solutions moved higher after expanding its presence in China, while defence stocks gained following a fresh procurement opportunity announced by the Ministry of Defence.

NMDC, however, remained under pressure for a second consecutive session after investors continued to digest its June quarter performance.

Here are the top movers and shakers at this hour:

Lenskart Solutions

Lenskart Solutions share price gained around 3.4% by midday after the eyewear company incorporated a new step-down subsidiary in China.

The company incorporated Wenzhou Framekart Trade Co., Ltd, which will be involved in trading, imports, exports and procurement of spectacle frames and related products.

Baofeng Framekart Technology is expected to hold a 95% equity interest in the entity through a proposed investment of RMB 1 million.

The development gives Lenskart another foothold in the Chinese eyewear supply chain and could help the company strengthen its procurement and sourcing capabilities in the region.

For investors, the move is significant because Lenskart already operates an increasingly international business and continues to expand its supply-chain capabilities.

Hindustan Aeronautics

Hindustan Aeronautics share price gained in midday trade as defence stocks came into focus following a fresh procurement opportunity from the Ministry of Defence.

The ministry has identified 405 strategically important items for procurement worth around Rs 3,070 crore.

The procurement opportunity covers a range of defence platforms and systems, with the government indicating that 389 of these items will be purchased from defence public-sector undertakings.

The announcement has increased expectations of potential order opportunities for domestic defence manufacturers.

For HAL, the development adds to the broader positive sentiment around India’s push towards defence indigenisation and greater domestic procurement.

Bharat Dynamics

Bharat Dynamics also moved higher as investors reacted to the Ministry of Defence’s procurement announcement.

The Rs 3,070 crore opportunity covers 405 strategically important defence items, including equipment intended for the Indian Coast Guard and other defence PSUs.

The announcement has once again placed missile and defence-equipment manufacturers in focus.

For Bharat Dynamics, increased domestic procurement could potentially translate into additional order opportunities over the longer term, although the actual benefit will depend on individual contracts and procurement timelines.

BEML

BEML share price also gained in midday trade as buying interest returned to defence stocks.

The Nifty India Defence index was up around 1.22%, reflecting broader strength across the sector following the Ministry of Defence announcement.

The proposed Rs 3,070 crore procurement opportunity covers several defence platforms and systems, with a large portion expected to be sourced from domestic defence PSUs.

The development has therefore provided another near-term sentiment boost to companies such as BEML, although investors will ultimately look for actual order wins and execution rather than simply the size of the overall procurement opportunity.

NMDC

NMDC share price declined around 2.3% by midday, extending its fall for a second consecutive session.

The stock remained under pressure after the company reported muted growth in its June quarter earnings, with higher costs weighing on the results.

Although metal prices have provided broader support to the mining sector, investors remain concerned about cost pressures and the extent to which higher volumes can translate into stronger profitability.

The weakness in NMDC comes despite an otherwise supportive commodity environment, suggesting that investors are currently focusing more closely on the company's margins and cost structure.

For the stock, the next major trigger will be whether improving metal prices and volumes can translate into a sustained recovery in earnings.

What investors should watch

Tuesday's midday action shows a clear divide between stocks benefiting from company-specific developments and sectors responding to fresh policy announcements.

Lenskart's China expansion has provided a boost to the stock, while the government's Rs 3,070 crore defence procurement opportunity has lifted sentiment across domestic defence manufacturers.

For HAL, Bharat Dynamics and BEML, however, investors will need to distinguish between the overall procurement opportunity and the actual orders eventually awarded to individual companies.

NMDC faces a different challenge, with investors looking for evidence that stronger commodity prices can offset rising costs and improve profitability.
