Stocks making the biggest moves midday Eternal, HDFC Bank, Strides, Shiprocket, Vedanta and more

Indian equity markets were trading higher by midday on Thursday, August 20, as buying interest returned across several sectors.

The Nifty 50 was hovering above 24,200, up around 0.58%, while the Sensex had gained nearly 500 points.

Pharmaceutical, logistics, metal and financial stocks were among the key areas attracting investor attention. Strides Pharma Sciences emerged as one of the biggest gainers, while Shiprocket continued its momentum following its recent market debut.

Here are the top movers and shakers at this hour:

Eternal

Eternal Ltd. gained around 2.27% in midday trade.

There was no immediate company-specific development driving the move. The stock appeared to be benefiting from the broader strength in Indian equity markets and renewed buying interest.

Eternal has remained one of the closely watched new-age technology stocks, and its movement continues to attract investor attention even in the absence of a major corporate announcement.

Unicommerce Esolutions and Urban Company

Unicommerce Esolutions gained around 2.71% by midday, while Urban Company was up approximately 0.60%.

The two companies remained in focus after expanding their existing partnership into Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Urban Company's Middle East operations will use Unicommerce's Uniware platform to manage inventory, replenishment and fulfilment across its at-home services network in the two markets.

The development gives Unicommerce an opportunity to expand its international presence while strengthening its relationship with Urban Company as the services platform grows outside India.

Shiprocket

Shiprocket shares advanced around 5.6% by midday, extending the momentum seen after the company's market debut on August 19.

The latest move came after reports suggested that Goldman Sachs acquired a stake in the logistics solutions provider through a bulk deal.

The reported institutional buying added to investor interest in the recently listed company and helped extend the stock's post-listing gains.

Shiprocket's market performance will now remain closely watched as investors assess institutional interest and the company's ability to justify its valuation after listing.

Vedanta, Hindustan Zinc and demerged entities

Metal stocks were broadly positive in midday trade.

Vedanta gained around 2%, while Hindustan Zinc advanced approximately 2.24%.

Among Vedanta's demerged entities, Vedanta Aluminium Metal rose around 1.86%, Vedanta Iron & Steel gained 2.85% and Vedanta Power added approximately 1.17%.

The strength was not limited to the Vedanta group.

Hindustan Copper gained around 0.57%, JSW Steel was up approximately 0.09% and NALCO advanced around 0.31%, with most Nifty Metal constituents trading in positive territory.

The broader move in metal stocks provided support to the sector as investors responded to improving market sentiment.

HDFC Bank and LIC

HDFC Bank gained around 1.08% by midday, while LIC advanced approximately 0.65%.

The stocks remained in focus after the Reserve Bank of India approved LIC's proposal to acquire an aggregate holding of up to 9.99% in HDFC Bank, subject to regulatory conditions.

LIC held a beneficial stake of around 4.11% in HDFC Bank as of August 14.

The RBI approval gives LIC additional flexibility to increase its stake in India's largest private-sector lender, although any further acquisition would remain subject to the applicable regulatory conditions.

Strides Pharma Sciences

Strides Pharma Sciences emerged as one of the strongest performers of the session, with the stock surging around 10% by midday.

The rally came after the US Food and Drug Administration issued an Establishment Inspection Report for the company's Bengaluru manufacturing facility.

The inspection outcome was classified as Voluntary Action Indicated, or VAI, following the company's response to five observations issued during the inspection.

The classification was viewed positively by investors, as it reduces concerns surrounding regulatory action against the facility and provides greater clarity on its USFDA compliance status.

The sharp rally shows how closely pharmaceutical investors continue to monitor regulatory developments, particularly for companies with significant exposure to international markets.

Aditya Birla Capital

Aditya Birla Capital gained more than 2.3% by midday after announcing its entry into the gold loan business.

The company plans to open between 200 and 300 dedicated gold loan branches by March 2027.

Over the following three years, Aditya Birla Capital aims to expand the network to around 1,000 branches.

The move marks a significant expansion into another lending category and could help the company diversify its financial services portfolio.

The success of the strategy will depend on how quickly the company can scale the business while maintaining asset quality and competing against established gold loan players.

What investors should watch

Thursday's market action reflected broad-based buying, but several stocks were also responding to important company-specific developments.

Strides Pharma Sciences received a major boost from the favourable USFDA inspection outcome, while Shiprocket extended its post-listing rally amid reports of institutional buying.

HDFC Bank and LIC remained in focus following the RBI's approval for LIC to potentially increase its holding, while Aditya Birla Capital attracted buying after outlining an ambitious expansion into the gold loan business.

Meanwhile, the broader strength in metals lifted Vedanta, Hindustan Zinc and several other companies across the sector.

The key question for investors will be whether the current market momentum can sustain itself or whether stock-specific developments will once again become the main driver of near-term returns.
