Sensex Slides 600 Points as Nifty Drops Below 23,900; IT Stocks Lead Market Sell-Off

Indian equity markets traded sharply lower on Wednesday as weak global sentiment, inflation worries and concerns over potential interest rate hikes triggered broad-based selling.

The Sensex fell over 600 points from earlier levels, while the Nifty50 slipped below the crucial 23,900 mark. Selling pressure was visible across benchmark and broader market stocks, although pharma and healthcare sectors showed relative resilience.

Sensex and Nifty Face Sharp Decline

As of 11:00 AM, the Sensex was down 541.20 points, or 0.70%, at 76,403.08.

The Nifty50 declined 203.05 points, or 0.84%, to 23,852.75.

The decline reflected weak investor sentiment as global equity markets struggled amid uncertainty surrounding inflation and the future path of interest rates.

Inflation and Rate-Hike Fears Weigh on Markets

Concerns over persistent inflation have raised worries that major central banks may maintain tighter monetary policies for longer than expected.

Higher interest rates can increase borrowing costs, affect corporate earnings and reduce liquidity available for equity markets. These concerns weighed heavily on investor risk appetite, leading to selling across several key sectors.

The weakness in global equities further added pressure on Indian markets.

Infosys, Eicher Motors and Shriram Finance Lead Nifty Losers

Among the Nifty50 stocks, Infosys, Eicher Motors and Shriram Finance emerged as the leading losers.

The decline in these heavyweight stocks contributed significantly to the weakness in benchmark indices.

Technology and auto stocks remained under pressure as investors turned cautious amid concerns over global economic growth and interest rates.

IT Sector Falls Over 2%

The Nifty IT index declined more than 2%, making it one of the worst-performing sectoral indices during the session.

Weakness in technology stocks reflected concerns about global demand and the potential impact of tighter monetary conditions on corporate spending.

The selling pressure in IT stocks played a major role in dragging the broader market lower.

Broader Markets Also Trade in the Red

Selling pressure extended beyond the benchmark indices.

The Nifty MidCap index declined 0.98%, while the Nifty SmallCap index was down 0.56%.

The weakness in broader markets indicated that investor caution was widespread, with selling seen across multiple segments.

Hero MotoCorp and Godrej Projects were among the notable names leading losses in the midcap space, highlighting the broader risk-off sentiment.

Auto and FMCG Stocks Underperform

Apart from IT, several other sectors also faced selling pressure.

The major underperformers included:

  • Nifty IT
  • Nifty Auto
  • Nifty FMCG

The weakness in these sectors reflected concerns about consumer demand, higher costs and the broader economic outlook.

Pharma and Healthcare Offer Defensive Support

Despite the overall market weakness, Nifty Pharma and Nifty Healthcare outperformed other sectoral indices.

The relative strength in defensive sectors suggested that investors were selectively moving towards segments perceived as more resilient during periods of market uncertainty.

However, gains in these sectors were not enough to offset the broader selling pressure.

Market Outlook: Volatility Remains Elevated

The sharp decline in benchmark indices highlights the cautious mood prevailing across the market. Global inflation trends and expectations regarding future interest rate decisions are likely to remain key factors influencing investor sentiment.

The 23,900 level on the Nifty50 will remain an important level for traders to monitor. Continued weakness in technology and auto stocks could keep pressure on the market, while sustained strength in defensive sectors such as pharma and healthcare may provide selective support.

Investors are likely to closely watch global inflation data, central bank signals and international equity market movements for further direction.
