Sensex, Nifty Struggle for Direction

The Indian stock market witnessed sharp swings between gains and losses on Thursday as investors attempted to assess the next direction for equities following several days of weakness.

The Sensex and Nifty50 remained volatile in early trade, with the Nifty trading below the 23,450 mark. The lack of a decisive trend reflected cautious positioning among market participants, with investors showing selective interest rather than engaging in broad-based buying.

After the recent decline, traders appeared to be looking for signs of stabilisation. However, persistent pressure across several sectors continued to restrict any meaningful recovery in the benchmark indices.

PSU Banks Lead Sectoral Gains

Among sectors, PSU banks emerged as the strongest-performing pocket of the market, attracting buying interest despite the broader uncertainty.

The strength in public-sector banking stocks provided some support to the benchmark indices and stood out against weakness across several other parts of the market.

Oil and gas stocks and private banks also traded with a positive bias, while IT, media, FMCG and broader financial services remained mildly positive.

The mixed performance indicates that investors are currently favouring selected sectors rather than taking aggressive positions across the market.

Auto Stocks Under Pressure

While banking stocks showed resilience, auto stocks remained among the key laggards.

The auto sector struggled to attract sustained buying interest during early trade, adding to the pressure on the broader market. The weakness was also accompanied by declines in pharma, healthcare and consumer durables.

The contrasting performance between PSU banks and auto stocks highlights the highly selective nature of the current market environment.

Pharma, Healthcare and Consumer Durables Weak

Selling pressure was also visible across pharma, healthcare and consumer durables.

The broader midcap and smallcap indices also remained under pressure, suggesting that risk appetite among investors remained limited.

Mid- and small-cap stocks often see heightened volatility during uncertain market conditions, and the weakness in these segments indicated that investors were maintaining a cautious approach.

Realty and Cement Stocks Also Decline

The realty and cement sectors also traded weak during the session.

The decline in these sectors added to the mixed-to-negative tone across the domestic market. With several cyclical sectors under pressure, the market lacked the broad-based participation typically associated with a strong recovery.

Instead, the day's action pointed towards selective buying in pockets of strength and continued selling in vulnerable sectors.

Global Markets Provide Weak Cues

Global market indicators offered limited support to Indian equities.

As of 7:08 a.m. Tokyo time, S&P 500 futures were little changed, indicating a lack of strong directional cues from US markets.

Meanwhile, Hang Seng futures fell 0.9%, while S&P/ASX 200 futures declined 1%.

The weak Asian futures setup added to the cautious mood in domestic markets, although the relatively stable S&P 500 futures suggested that global sentiment was not uniformly negative.

Market Outlook

The Indian market remains in a highly selective and volatile phase after several sessions of losses.

The Sensex's movement between gains and losses and the Nifty's struggle below 23,450 indicate that investors are still searching for a clear direction. PSU banks are currently providing some support, while pressure on auto, pharma, healthcare, consumer durables and broader mid- and small-cap stocks is limiting the market's recovery potential.

Going ahead, traders are likely to track global market cues and sector-specific developments closely. A sustained improvement in broader participation could be important for a stronger rebound, while continued weakness in multiple sectors could keep volatility elevated.

For now, selective buying rather than broad-based strength remains the dominant theme in the Indian stock market.
