Amazon plans to allocate a substantial sum of up to $4 billion into Anthropic, a competitor of OpenAI, the developer behind ChatGPT: ICCBizNews

On Monday, the e-commerce behemoth Amazon announced its intention to invest a substantial sum of up to $4 billion in the artificial intelligence firm Anthropic, alongside acquiring a minority stake in the company.

This strategic move highlights Amazon's proactive efforts in the realm of artificial intelligence, aiming to remain competitive against industry rivals like Microsoft and Google, who have been making significant strides in this field.

Anthropic, a company established approximately two years ago, was founded by former executives from OpenAI's research division. Recently, it made a noteworthy entrance into the AI landscape with the launch of its latest AI chatbot named Claude 2.

Amazon is strategically positioning itself to harness the momentum and potential of generative AI, a technology encompassing offerings like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude chatbots.

In an announcement on Monday, these two companies disclosed their collaborative efforts to advance generative AI. As part of this partnership, the startup, Anthropic, has chosen Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its primary cloud provider. Anthropic has committed to granting AWS users early access to exclusive features for customizing and refining their AI models.

Additionally, Anthropic will leverage custom semiconductors designed by AWS to train the foundational models that underlie its AI applications. These foundational models are extensive AI programs, trained on vast datasets, designed to adapt to a wide spectrum of tasks.

In the current year, Nvidia, a semiconductor company, has experienced the most significant growth due to the surging popularity of generative AI technology. Nvidia's primary product is a type of semiconductor called a graphics processing unit (GPU), which is instrumental in training large AI models. At a certain juncture, Nvidia's stock soared by over 200% as the company outperformed financial expectations, thanks to the increasing utilization of AI.

Partially, Amazon's partnership with Anthropic intends to highlight the availability of alternative chips suitable for AI applications, emphasizing that there are viable options beyond Nvidia's GPUs.

AWS customers will gain the capability to leverage Anthropic's AI models through Amazon Bedrock, a service that facilitates the development of generative AI applications in the cloud using pre-existing models, thus eliminating the need for customers to train their own.

Amazon is actively positioning itself as a comprehensive destination for all things AI. The e-commerce titan designs its own specialized chips for the training of extensive AI models. Via Amazon Bedrock, customers can also create their own generative AI applications using existing models, all of which are hosted on the Amazon cloud infrastructure. Moreover, the company offers its own suite of AI applications for sale.

Anthropic has already garnered significant support from prominent backers, including Google and Salesforce Ventures. This backing aligns with the trend of tech giants making substantial investments in AI companies, spurred by Microsoft's multi-billion dollar investment in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, earlier this year.
