India and Japan have concurred to enhance their economic collaboration, with a specific focus on advancing the high-speed railway project.

At the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), both ministers engaged in discussions about regional matters such as the Indo-Pacific and the situation in Ukraine, as well as reforms within the Security Council.

On Friday, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar and his Japanese counterpart Yōko Kamikawa reached a consensus to bolster economic cooperation, with a particular emphasis on ensuring continuous advancement of the high-speed railway project—an esteemed collaborative endeavor between India and Japan.

The two ministers convened in New York amid the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

In a half-hour meeting, both ministers underscored the importance of upholding and fortifying a free and open global order founded on the principles of the rule of law. Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement affirming that Japan and India would enhance their efforts in addressing global issues.

Furthermore, the two ministers exchanged perspectives on regional matters such as the Indo-Pacific and the situation in Ukraine, as well as reforms within the Security Council.

EAM Jaishankar extended his congratulations to Foreign Minister Kamikawa on her appointment.

In response, Minister Kamikawa conveyed her commitment to further advancing the "Japan-India Special Strategic and Global Partnership" and expressed admiration for India's role as the Chair of the G20 New Delhi Summit.

Minister Kamikawa also emphasized that, in their capacities as the presidencies of the G7 and G20 respectively, both nations had effectively collaborated and aligned G7 outcomes with those of the G20.

Taking to his social media platform, 'X' (formerly known as Twitter), Jaishankar shared, "It was a pleasure to meet Japan's Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa at #UNGA78. We exchanged views regarding our Special Strategic and Global Partnership, discussed regional, multilateral, and global cooperation, and explored ways to advance them."

Jaishankar is currently leading the Indian delegation on a week-long visit to New York. As per an official statement by the Ministry of External Affairs, he is slated to speak at a High-Level session of the 78th UNGA on September 26.

During his stay from September 22 to September 30, Jaishankar will host a special event titled 'India-UN for Global South: Delivering for Development,' aligning with India's commitment to supporting the Global South.

After concluding his engagements related to the 78th UNGA, the external affairs minister will travel to Washington DC from September 27 to September 30 for bilateral discussions with US counterparts. His itinerary includes meetings with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, high-ranking members of the US administration, leaders from the US business community, and participation in dialogues with think tanks.
