The official statement released on Saturday indicated that domestic coal-fueled electricity production surged by 8.38 percent, reaching 779.1 Billion Units (BU) in April-November FY24.

Compared to the previous year, the domestic coal-based power generation stood at 718.83 BU during the same period.

According to a statement from the coal ministry, India's overall power generation increased by 7.71 percent during this period.

The collective coal-based power generation observed a year-on-year growth of 11.19 percent in this duration due to unusually high temperatures, delayed monsoons in the northern region, and the full resumption of commercial activities post-Covid.

Despite the rising power demand, coal imports for blending sharply declined by 44.28 percent to 15.16 million tonnes (MT) up to November in the current fiscal year, down from 27.21 MT during the same period last year.

"This signifies the country's dedication to self-sufficiency in coal production and reducing the overall reliance on coal imports," stated the ministry.

The government remains steadfast in its endeavors to boost coal production further, with the goal of augmenting availability and decreasing reliance on imported coal, thereby safeguarding foreign reserves.
