India reaffirms import restrictions on specific electronics and IT goods

India has reiterated its restrictions on the import of certain electronics and IT goods, according to an official notification from the Commerce Ministry dated May 20. The order, initially implemented in 2021, has been updated to continue enforcing strict controls and prohibitions on non-compliant products to ensure they meet Indian safety and quality standards.

The import of unregistered and non-compliant electronics and IT goods remains prohibited. A government official clarified to Reuters that this notification does not introduce new changes but maintains the existing restrictions.

For LED products and DC/AC supplied control gears for LED modules, the updated policy requires agencies to randomly select and test samples from consignments based on specific non-destructive safety parameters. Only consignments meeting these parameters will receive customs approval.

Non-compliant consignments will be returned or destroyed at the importer's expense. Goods that fail to meet the Bureau of Indian Standards or labelling requirements will be either re-exported or scrapped by government agencies.

This measure aims to uphold the quality and safety of electronics and IT goods in the Indian market, ensuring compliance with national standards.
