Sensex Rises 350 Points, Nifty Above 24,700; Sugar Stocks Surge Ahead of GST Meet

The Indian equity markets opened on a positive note on Tuesday, with Sensex climbing 350 points and Nifty breaching 24,700, as all sectors traded in green. Investor sentiment remained upbeat ahead of the two-day GST Council Meeting scheduled for September 3–4, where key decisions on proposed GST reforms are expected.

Sectoral performance was broad-based, with energy and FMCG stocks leading intraday gains. Power Grid emerged as the top gainer among Sensex 30 stocks, up 2.23% at ₹286, followed closely by Reliance Industries, which rose nearly 2%. Other notable gainers included NTPC, Hindustan Unilever, Bajaj Finance, Adani Ports, and Bharti Airtel.

On the downside, Mahindra & Mahindra slipped 1%, while Infosys, Asian Paints, and UltraTech Cement witnessed marginal declines. Despite this, the market breadth remained strong, supported by midcap and smallcap stocks. The NSE MidCap 100 gained 0.58%, while the Nifty SmallCap 100 rose 0.7%.

The highlight of the session was the sharp rally in sugar stocks, soaring up to 20% after reports confirmed that the government has permitted sugar mills and distilleries to produce ethanol from sugarcane juice, syrup, and all types of molasses without volume restrictions for Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2025-26. This policy shift is expected to boost profitability in the sugar and ethanol sector.

With markets holding firm momentum and investors awaiting clarity from the upcoming GST Council deliberations, traders are keeping a close watch on policy cues and sectoral triggers.
