Synopsis : India’s leading digital commerce companies have joined hands to launch the Digital Commerce Coalition (DCC), a new industry body aimed at shaping the future of e-commerce, entrepreneurship, innovation and consumer trust.
The coalition seeks to address key sector challenges while supporting sustainable growth, MSME participation, delivery partner welfare and responsible digital commerce practices across India.
India’s rapidly evolving digital commerce ecosystem has received a major boost with the launch of the Digital Commerce Coalition (DCC), a new industry body formed by some of the country's largest e-commerce and quick-commerce platforms.
The coalition includes major players such as Amazon, Eternal (formerly Zomato), Meesho, Swiggy and Zepto. Notably, Flipkart is currently not part of the newly formed industry body.
According to reports, the Digital Commerce Coalition will serve as a collaborative platform for industry stakeholders to discuss policy matters, conduct research and address sector-wide priorities as India's digital commerce market continues to expand across Tier-II and Tier-III cities.
The coalition aims to focus on several critical areas, including customer trust, consumer experience, delivery partner welfare, entrepreneurship development, MSME growth, supply-chain efficiency, responsible innovation and sustainable business practices.
The formation of DCC comes at a time when India's digital economy is witnessing strong momentum, driven by increasing smartphone penetration, wider internet access, changing consumer behavior and the emergence of new business models in e-commerce and quick commerce.
Public policy consulting firm Koan Advisory Group has been appointed as the secretariat for the coalition and will oversee research initiatives, stakeholder engagement and policy discussions.
Industry leaders have highlighted the broader impact of digital commerce on India's economy. Eternal's Head of Public Policy, Dr. Jaskiran Bedi, stated that digital commerce is creating new opportunities for entrepreneurship while making everyday consumption more accessible and convenient for millions of consumers.
Meesho's Head of Public Policy, Prachi Bhuchar, emphasized that digital commerce has become a powerful enabler for small businesses and underserved markets by creating new avenues for entrepreneurship and economic participation.
Zepto's Chief Policy Officer, Rachit Ranjan, noted that industry-wide collaboration can help address challenges related to MSME access, supply chain development and consumer trust, which remain crucial for the sector's long-term growth.
The Digital Commerce Coalition joins a growing list of industry advocacy groups representing India's technology and internet ecosystem, including the Alliance of Digital India Foundation (ADIF), the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and the Startup Policy Forum (SPF).
Meanwhile, discussions around gig worker welfare continue to gain attention. Virjesh Upadhyay, Chairperson of the Dattopant Thengadi National Board for Workers Education and Development (DTNBWED), highlighted the need for India's legal framework to evolve alongside the growing platform economy.
He suggested that existing labour laws may require structural reforms to better accommodate platform workers and delivery partners associated with companies such as Swiggy, Zomato and other digital platforms. Upadhyay stressed the importance of ensuring social security, welfare benefits and worker-centric policies as the gig economy expands across the country.
As India's digital commerce sector continues its rapid growth trajectory, the newly launched Digital Commerce Coalition could play a significant role in shaping future policy discussions, fostering innovation and creating a more inclusive ecosystem for businesses, workers and consumers alike.
