Market Volatility Rises: Sensex Slips 270 pts, Nifty Near 26,100 – SMIDs Bleed as VIX Surges 13%

Stock Market LIVE Updates — November 21, 2025

Indian equities opened on a weak note and continued to drift lower through the morning session, influenced by lacklustre global signals and increased investor caution.

At 11 AM, the BSE Sensex slipped to 85,316, down 316 points (0.37%), while the NSE Nifty50 fell 107 points (0.41%) to trade near 26,085.

The selling pressure remained prominent across large-cap counters. Major laggards included Tata Steel, Eternal, ICICI Bank, Tech Mahindra, Adani Ports, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance, BEL, HCL Tech, and Axis Bank, each declining up to 1.3%.

In contrast, only a handful of stocks were able to resist the downtrend. M&M, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors PV, Titan, Kotak Bank, Bharti Airtel, and Ultratech Cement emerged as the day’s top gainers on the Sensex.

The pressure intensified in the broader markets as well, with the Nifty Midcap 100 down 0.83% and Nifty Smallcap 100 lower by 0.91%, reflecting widespread weakness.

Sectorally, the sentiment remained negative across the board. Except for Nifty Auto, which gained 0.17%, all other sectoral indices on the NSE were trading in the red. Nifty Metal, PSU Bank, and Realty were the biggest losers, each declining over 1%.

Adding to market jitters, the India VIX, the volatility or "fear index," surged 13.28%, indicating rising uncertainty and caution among investors.
